3 things to consider when looking for a wedding venue

So now you're engaged and taking on the overwhelming task of planning a whole wedding. Maybe you're already thinking about your wedding photos and dreaming of the stunning portraits that will decorate your shared home.

As a wedding photographer, I always get excited for a good venue because I know the photos will be extra gorgeous. But that doesn't mean you have to spend a ton on a venue to have great wedding portraits - in fact, there are 3 simple qualities I would look for that work across budgets.

Here are my tips for what to look for in a wedding venue to make your photos absolutely breathtaking!

Natural Lighting

Look for places with lots of large windows. Natural lighting is a photographer's best friend. It is central to clear, natural looking portraits with even lighting. Often, indoor lighting can be harsh and unflattering, casting shadows on the face. Of course, a little editing goes a long way, but windows everywhere is a photographer's dream.

Drama (and framing)

Photographers love a dramatic venue with some personality - bonus points for arches! Spots that offer natural framing in the form of arches or dramatic doorways, etc. are ideal, but this doesn't have to break the bank. Keep an eye out for the natural beauty in your hometown. Local churches and parks can be beautiful backdrops for your big day.

Just Right for You

It's your wedding! The venue you pick should make you feel happy and comfortable for your special day, and trust me, it will show in the pictures. The more relaxed and happy you are, the more natural and beautiful your photos will look. And looking back at them in the future will bring you back to those moments.
